Inclusion
Expand access to European opportunities for young people who face greater barriers to mobility.
DiscoverEU Inclusion · 2025–2026
Three international train journeys creating educational, cultural and personal experiences for young people with fewer opportunities across Europe.
The project
A Journey for Inclusion is an Erasmus+ DiscoverEU Inclusion project promoted by MediterrArt APS and carried out between September 2025 and June 2026. It was designed to offer young people with fewer opportunities an educational, cultural and personal experience outside their usual environments, through three international mobilities mainly by rail.
Travel is part of the educational method: planning connections, finding our way through stations, managing luggage and unexpected events, living and working as a group and exploring different cities and cultures all create opportunities for independence, adaptability and confidence.
The initiative aims to reduce economic, geographical and social barriers that often limit young people’s access to international experiences. Slower, shared travel allows participants to experience Europe first-hand, meet people with different habits and perspectives and feel part of a wider European community.
The project also produced a Youth Guide to Sustainable Travel in Europe, based on the participants’ experience and designed as a practical resource for other young travellers. Go to the guide ↓
Focus
Expand access to European opportunities for young people who face greater barriers to mobility.

Use trains as a mode of transport and an integral part of the educational experience.
Discover different places and cultures through first-hand encounters and group life.
DiscoverEU on the move
Three different routes shaped by the same goal: crossing Europe sustainably and turning every connection, encounter and new city into an opportunity for independence and learning.

The first route: the Mediterranean, major cities and a first chance to practise independence.

A route through Central and Eastern Europe, with cities, snow, culture and adaptability.

History, art and different regions discovered at a slower pace, one stop at a time.
Travel diaries
Our first journey took us from southern Italy through France and Spain by train, on a route full of discoveries. After the long first transfer, the group reached Marseille and explored the Vieux-Port, Le Panier, La Major Cathedral and the views from Notre-Dame de la Garde. In Madrid, we discovered Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Retiro Park and the Reina Sofía Museum. Barcelona brought us to Park Güell, the Sagrada Família, La Rambla, La Boqueria and Barceloneta. The journey ended with a final stop in Nice on the French Riviera during the festive season. Independence, teamwork, navigation and adaptation became part of learning together throughout the route.

Our second journey crossed Central and Eastern Europe, bringing together different cities and meaningful moments of personal growth. The group first stopped in Vienna to explore the Belvedere, Klimt’s The Kiss and the historic city centre. Bucharest offered the lively Lipscani district, the Cărturești Carusel bookshop and the city’s winter atmosphere. In Brașov, the historic centre, Black Church and snow-covered streets offered a new perspective. Budapest welcomed the group with snow, the Central Market Hall and walks along the Danube; an excursion to Győr introduced a quieter side of Hungary. Along the way, navigating unfamiliar places and handling changes together became opportunities to learn.

Our third journey took us through Germany and Austria. In Munich, we explored the historic centre and cultural landmarks. Nuremberg added a strong dimension of European remembrance through visits to the Imperial Castle and courtroom 600 at the Nuremberg Trials Memorial. We then continued to Vienna, with its art and architecture, before visiting Melk and Krems, where smaller towns offered another view of the region. Once again, navigating, planning and responding to the unexpected were part of learning on the move.
